Argus Monitors
Varanus gouldii horni

Argus monitors have always been one of our favorite lizards. They are the most dinosaur-like lizards we have ever encountered. We have been working with these lizards since 1998. With patience, commitment, and little luck anyone can breed these magnificent lizards.

Argus monitors are indigenous to a semi arid area of New Guinea. There is a distinct wet and dry season, with the majority of the water falling in June. Temperatures vary in this area of New Guinea from 64-98 degrees. Clutch size has varied between 2-10 eggs per clutch with 1-3 clutches per year. Fertile eggs typically weigh between 50-76 grams and hatchlings average 43 grams. Incubation temperature varies between 82-85 degrees, hatching takes place between 167-224 days. Babies are rambunctious and will typically tripod and hiss from birth. However, the father of most of our babies is extremely tame and with some time and patience you could have a great pet. Care sheets are available for this species and can be found here. If you have any questions about these fascinating lizards please email us and we’ll be happy to help.
