Water Monitor
Water monitors are a large, powerful lizard from South-East Asia, Philippines, and Indonesia.
There are many different sub-species of water monitors and their size and color vary, depending on their locale. Adult males have reached nine feet and weighted 150 pounds. Female water monitors grow at a slower rate and are much smaller than males. Breeding is somewhat difficult and most females will become sexually mature within 3-4 years. In 1999 we acquired the most beautiful female water monitor we had ever seen. We bred this female to a normal male and half of the babies were high yellow and half appeared normal.
We believe this is a co-dominate or dominate trait and hopefully we can breed two of these high yellow water monitors together. If we’re lucky some type of super form will be produced. We usually get two clutches a year with 4-11 eggs in each clutch. Fertile eggs are heavy and weigh 53-82 grams. We incubate our eggs at 84 degrees and most clutches will hatch within 230 days. Care sheets are available for this species and can be found here. If you have any questions about these fascinating lizards please email us and we’ll be happy to help.
